Manual Submission

Submitting websites or web pages to search engines and directories for listing in search programs, using the rules and guidelines specifically for each index. Major directories, like Yahoo! have a unique structure; you must adhere to their requirements. Items like title and description typically allow a specific number of characters, limiting the length of information.

Search engines prevent using automated submit programs by including a “captcha” image containing code requiring that it be hand typed into a text box. These search engines require manual submitting process only. Some search engines and directories require payment, usually annually, for inclusion. Other listings require a payment for every time a web user clicks on a link to your site. This is called a “pay-per-click” search engine. These also require submitting manually.

META Description

Format: <META name=“Description” content=“Web page description”> Meta tag used to describe the purpose of a web page. Meta Description importance varies among search engines. It may appear in the browser for your listing, so it should be present, even if some search enignes do not use it for ranking purposes.

META Keywords

Format: <META name=“Keywords” content=“keyword1, keyword2, keyword3”> This tag lists key words or key phrases about the content for a specific web page. Most search engines do not use this tag for indexing purposes.

META Refresh

Forama: <META http-equiv=“refresh” content=“0;url=http://mysite.com/”> This tag redirects or “refreshes” site visitors to a different page after a specified number of seconds. META Refresh tags are frequently used for a doorway page that is optimized for a particular search engine. The refresh may occur very rapidly, so site users do not see the original page. Often used along with other techniques considered unethical or “illegal” by search engines.

META Robots

Format: <META name=“Robots” content=“INDEX,FOLLOW”> This robots meta tag informs search engine robots if a web should, or should not, be indexed or whether links from the page should be included indexing, and how often the recrawl the page. The use of robots meta tag has decreased with the increase use of the Robots.txt file, included in the root directory for a domain.

Meta Robots Tag

An HTML tag that instructs search engine spiders to index the page or to ignore that page. Instructions include: all, none, index, noindex, follow and nofollow.

Meta Search

This is a “search of searches” A query that is submitted to multiple search engines or directories, withe the results listed from all the engines. Also the meta search engine with the name http://www.metasearch.com/

Meta Search Engine

A search engine that contains data from a number of search engines and combines them into one listing. Popular examples are Dogpile, IxQuick, and Vivisim. Most Internet users are unaware they are meta search engine to locate websites.

Meta Tag

Code placed in the HTML header of a web page that includes information not viewable in browsers. Examples of meta tags are TITLE, KEYWORDS, DESCRIPTION, ROBOTS, and HTTP-EQUIV. The HTTP-EQUIV meta tag contains HTTP commands. Other common meta tags are GENERATOR that records the software used to produce the web page. The AUTHOR meta tag is used to identify the author of the page.

Metacrawler

A meta search engine found at http://www.metacrawler.com/ that lists multiple search engines results.

MiniRank/Local Rank

A variation of Google Page Rank that is based on the link structure of a single site only. Because search engines rank pages, and not websites, specific pages on a site will rank higher for given keywords than others. Local Rank is considered important for overall Page Rank.

Mirror

An identical, or nearly identical, duplicate website or web page. Common use - targeting different keywords and key phrases. A mirror website is considered a violation of search engines’ terms of service and will result in banning of both the mirror (duplicate) and the original site.

Mirror Site

A website established to back up another site if the orgianal site is overloaded or suffers technical problems. This site is also considered a load balancing site that activates when origianal site has large amounts of traffic and response times become slow. The mirror site on a different server is then used to maintain normal service.

Misspellings

Intentionally misspelling key search terms to enchance “hits” by misspelled search terms by users. Used frequently in alt tags, keyword, page name and title tags.

Moderator

A person who monitors Internet forum entries and blocks or deletes posts with offensive language and frivolous and non-relevant content.

Monitoring

The process of checking a website’s online availability. The monitoring system notifies site owner immediately when the site is not available.

Monitoring Center

A program that “queries” a web server to check its availability and proper functioning.

Monitoring Interval

A period of time between web server testing, typically 5 minutes to 2 or more hours. If a web server goes down, a site owner will receive a ‘website down’ status report.

Motivated Visits

A site visitation where two or more pages are browsed by the user. The ratio of visits where multiple pages are viewed by a site visitor is considered a positive for a website attractiveness.

Multiple Titles

Using the META Title tag repeatedly on a web page to improve search engine indexing. Most search engines will only index one title tag, so attempting to trick search engines with multiple title tags will not improve the listing.
