Q

Query

A request for information from a search engine or database. The user keys in specific words or topics, and the search engine sends matching results from its database to the browser. A query is used for all search engine requests.

R

Ranking

The order a search engine shows results from its indexed database, relevant to a specific searcher’s query. Each search engine uses a unique algorithm to rank pages. Search engines use algorithms that combine both key word relevance and page link popularity for ranking purposes.

Ranking Algorithm

A methodology used by search engines to calculate position listing results. Ranking algorithms use a number of criteria that include the site domain name, spiderable text content, the HTML code and page/site link popularity. Search engine ranking algorithms are considered top secret by search engine companies. The algorithms continuously undergo revisions to make the search engine indexing accurate and to locate sites attempting to manipulate ranking results.

Re-Submission

Repeating a website registration procedure for a search engine. Search engines may regard this as a spamming technique if a site is submitted too often. A search engine may remove a website for repeated re-submission. Some search engines limit the number of submissions for a specific web page within a 24 hour period. Re-submitting a site periodically, when pages within the site change, is considered a proper procedure by search engines.

Reach

This is a “customer life cycle” process. It is the likelihood of getting and maintaining a prospective site visitor’s interest. It is measured as the number of people who view an advertisement and is defined by the the number of people who visit a website where an ad appears. It is also measured by the number of people in a mailing list. Also called an “unduplicated audience.”

Reciprocal Links

A link from one website to another, in exchange for a link back. This is traditionally a way to build link popularity, leading to high search engine rankings. Links exchange is a good low-cost strategy for linking sites. A prospective reciprocal link site should be researched to ensure the site is relevant and is not a site that is not spamming.

Registration

The procedure for informing a search engine or directory that a new web page or web site should be indexed.

Relevance

A method for measuring of how accurately a search result or keyword ad matches a user’s keyword query. The more relevant a web page or advertisement the more likely site vistors will respond positively. Relevance for a site entry/landing page improves visitors “site experience.”
